Aurel Schmidt

Aurel Schmidt is known for her highly detailed drawings, which often includes such unexpected items as cigarettes, skulls and idols of mixed religious identities. These compositions are humorous, sometimes dirty, and a little more than thought-provoking. Aurel also works in sculpture and photography. She lives and works in New York City.

Aurel Schmidt (b. 1982) was included in the 2010 Whitney Biennial. Her first solo exhibition was at Deitch Projects, New York. Notable group exhibitions include those at Saatchi Gallery, London. Deste Foundation Centre For Contemporary Art, Athens  M+B Gallery, Los Angeles and Garage Center of Contemporary Culture, Moscow. Aurel is the subject of four monographs. The most recent was published in 2011 with Mörel Books with poems by the Pulitzer-Prize winning poet Franz Wright.
