Lawrence Lemaoana

Lawrence Lemaoana is an artist living and working in Johannesburg, South Africa. He makes graphic, visually stirring pieces often containing powerful phrases primarily woven out of kanga fabric. His imagery and word use confront and challenge the power of the media, its tools of propaganda, and impact on people’s psyche and everyday lives.

He has exhibited extensively both in South Africa and internationally. His first solo show, "Fortune Telling in Black, White and Red," was shown at Stevenson Gallery in Johannesburg in 2008. He has won numerous awards, including the 2005 Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award for the most promising artist. Currently, Lemaoana is a Junior Lecturer at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria, South Africa.
